Are you feeling some type of way? Hidden signs of Depression

The image of the depressed person we usually consider is the sad, withdrawn, tearful teen, but that image is only part of the story.

For so many, especially those with high functioning depression, the signs that you should talk to someone are often less overt. With an increase in high profile completed suicides, it’s important to recognize some of the less obvious red flags that there is a mental health need for you or someone you love.

While these four points are not a definitive diagnosis, which can only come from a qualified mental health professional, they are often overlooked and can also be managed by the support of mental health hygiene.

Anger and Extreme Emotions

Most people know that feeling sad can be related to depression, but did you know there are other extreme emotions and moods that can be a sign? When you find yourself being more frustrated than you would expect or get irritated by things that you would normally blow off, that can be a sign that you are at risk for a depressive episode.

Inability to Sleep with Fatigue

Sleep is an essential function of the human body and one of the first indicators that our mental health could use a tune-up. When you find yourself being exhausted but are unable to fall or stay asleep, your mental health could be part of the cause. Are your thoughts racing as you try to drift off, are you so frustrated that you can unwind? While the occasional restless night is not uncommon, if you’ve had more than a handful of nights when you’ve been unable to get the sleep you need, it’s time to do something about it.

Unexplained Body Aches

Did this one surprise you? Physical pain is often related to emotional pain and many people have no idea. Body aches can happen when you workout or when you are sick with a cold or flu, but they can also indicate emotional discomfort. Unresolved tension that you’re holding in your body can be a major culprit of this discomfort and so can unresolved trauma or chronic stress. If you have more pain than you think you should, make a note.

Lack of Focus and Determination

I see this one so much, and people never attribute it to an emotional cause. Distraction or a lack of focus can be a sign that depression is on the way. Think of your mind as a computer with too many tabs open. Everything begins to slow dow. This often leads to low energy or motivation which can compound the negative emotions you feel.

When you have any symptoms of depression, whether they are common or just things you can’t quite explain, there is help available for you. Many people with mild depression find that behavioral activation can give them quite a bit of relief. If that doesn’t resolve the things that you feel, it’s time to get professional help.
